why change how You lead?

Because the pressure profile of leadership has changed - and it’s changing leaders with it. In many organisations, “high performance” now means constant stimulation: back-to-back meetings, always-on communications, rapid change, and little tolerance for uncertainty. Under that load, the nervous system adapts. What starts as commitment can quietly become compulsion.

 

And it’s common. Research by McKinsey & Hogan suggests around half of leaders fail at some point. That doesn’t mean they're weak - it means sustained strain reliably undermines both judgement and behaviour. Most leaders don’t collapse. They narrow: more urgency, more control, more proving… less listening, less recovery, less range. You may still look calm and capable - but inside, leadership starts to cost more energy than it should. Truth arrives later. Decision quality gets poorer. Meaning thins.

I don’t speak about Reset from theory. I learned it the hard way.

 

Twice in my leadership career I brushed up against burnout. My coping strategies looked like “strong leadership” at first: doubling down, controlling, pushing harder, staying across everything. My sleep and health took the hit. Then my leadership narrowed: less patience, less listening, faster decisions with less wisdom, more edge with less humanity - and the cost leaked into relationships and culture.

In high-pressure leadership, self-regulation isn’t a lifestyle accessory - it’s a strategic capability. I learned to map what makes me reactive, spot early warning cues, and practise the interventions that bring me back to calm authority: better recovery, cleaner boundaries, clearer choices, fewer overplays.
